A lot of organizations are either on a journey towards digital transformation or trying to figure out what the heck it is and how to approach it. This process can get convoluted and confusing. Most organisations just end up benchmarking against an industry leader. The problem with this is organisational change is peculiar; even within the same industries and markets, no two organisations are the same and implementing a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t always effective. Someone else’s best practice is not necessarily your best practice.

So how does one go from point X to the promised land – i.e. Future Ready state where you’re innovating with a customer centric mindset while maintaining low costs; leveraging readily available technologies as defined by MIT CISR.

To become Future Ready, a company must transform across three dimensions: customer experience, operational efficiency and organisational culture. These embody aspects of the organisation including organisational structure, infrastructure, process, product, brand, core values, employees’ thinking, people management, knowledge management and more.

Before focusing on these aspects of change however, the first and most important step is identifying what exactly needs to change. This process of identifying where you currently are (AS IS) and where you’d like to be (TO BE) – Discovery or Gap Analysis, is the key to a successful transformation.

To put some perspective, imagine building a 20-storey building on a foundation that was designed for a bungalow! This can only occur where preliminary findings such as soil testing, confirmation of client requirements and budget, modelling etc were skipped or improperly done before plunging into building. The Discovery process is equivalent to these preliminary steps in building a house. Now we can proceed to figuring out which path will lead the company to salvation and how to prioritise the changes.
